In the age of social media, it’s so easy to say something that could end up getting you in a lot of trouble. I know I myself have done it.
The problem isn’t if you are right or you are wrong, it’s how much money you are willing to spend to defend yourself and what you might have said on Twitter or Facebook.
It’s so easy to tweet when you are emotional, but that tweet could end up costing you tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees or, even worse, millions in damages.
Just a few short months ago, Emily Willis filed suit against two porn stars who were tweeting some things about her that she didn’t like.
In the end, Emily Willis decided she wasn’t going to stand by and let people trash talk her online, so she got a lawyer and filed a $5 million lawsuit against them.
Even if those two she is suing did nothing wrong, they still have to spend a lot of money on legal fees defending themselves and what they said about Emily Willis.
In 2020 Craven Moorehead sued a porn star who accused him of sexual assault. He’s now suing her for $10 million, saying he has proof she is lying.
And you know what? It doesn’t matter if he does or doesn’t. In the end, that porn star he is suing had to either figure out a way to pay for a lawyer to defend herself or end up owing Craven Moorehead $10 million This is a lawsuit that was filed in September of 2020 and is still making its way through the courts.
Simply put, lawsuits are expensive both to file them and defend against them If you say something on social media about someone that they don’t like, they could sue you Even if you aren’t in the wrong, can you really afford the legal fees to fight them?
Even if you could, do you really want to spend thousands and thousands of dollars doing it That’s why so many people just settle out of court It’s easier to just make it go away than spend the money it takes to defend against the suit.
To be clear here, I AM NOT A LAWYER Nothing I say here is me giving you legal advice I’m only suggesting that maybe you should think twice about what you say on social media because it could be a very costly mistake.
It sucks that you can’t say what you want I get it Trust me, I get it You have no idea how many people I want to curse out daily But in the end, I know they have lawyers so I have to watch what I say and how I say it.
Even if a person has truth on their side, it still doesn’t mean that TRUTH won’t cost you, to defend it.
So all of that being said, please think twice before you make that heartfelt YouTube video or the series of Tweets about some guy or girl who did you wrong Because even if you are sure you are right, that being “right” could still be VERY costly.
Are you sure it’s worth it?
That’s the question you need to ask yourself Is what you are saying worth spending tens of thousands (or more) in legal fees?
Because that’s the choice you may have to make.
To be clear, I’m not saying it’s not worth it I for one, do it all the time I’m just saying please think about it carefully and weigh the pros and cons of defending yourself in court because more and more people are lawyering up and fighting these things.
I call people jackasses all the time but I also know that doing that means I have to spend money on lawyers.
So make sure before you say something you not only have the evidence to prove what you are saying is true but that you can afford the lawyer to do it because just being right is no longer enough.
